Static Dread: The Submarine Map of the Ares

Learn the hull so a sealed hatch is a missing report, not a missing button.

Ares Map and Decks

Static Dread: The Submarine does not give you a full RTS overlay of the Ares. You get corridors, labels on bulkheads, and a mental map you build after the electromagnetic strike. This page is the launch-week layout for that boat: which decks matter, why doors stay sealed, where save consoles sit, and how blocked compartments open. It is not a pixel-perfect blueprint. Steam screenshots and the in-game schematic already show names such as Bridge, Reactor Control, Mainframe, Engineering, and Torpedo Room. Use those labels. Do not paste a custom SVG and call it a map.

The game launched 14 August 2026 as a single-player Windows title. Demo and playtest layouts were shorter. If a room you remember from February is missing, trust retail. Pair this page with Getting Started for the opening stairwell and with how to survive when leaks start moving.

How the Ares is organised

Think in jobs, not tourist floors.

  • Accident spine — central stair, tactical quarters you cannot loot yet, the hatch someone is sealing, painted tubes to pressure control. This is the first hour. Logging the stairwell as secure is what opens the bridge. Wandering does not.
  • Bridge — briefing, surviving officers, the drive that unlocks the First Mate roster. You return here when the story wants a heading or a confession.
  • First Mate / roster console — not a tourist stop. Assign Kelly, Zack, Sharon, and Michael here. Crew management is the manual for that screen.
  • Mainframe / sonar — watches live here. The console will not auto-lock. Sonar is how you read it. Demo notes added the ability to lay a route; if you ignore the route, the boat can die. That is a map problem as much as a minigame.
  • Engineering and reactor access — Sharon’s world until she is a corpse. The clock is days, not minutes. Do not treat a sealed reactor door as a secret; it is usually a roster card you have not spent.
  • Crew country — berths, mess, medical, communications. Kelly wants comms restorations. Michael wants stores. Timmy’s injury and later algae scenes use these rooms. How to deal with Timmy belongs beside this paragraph, not on a lore wiki for The Lighthouse.
  • Outer hull / drone lock — hull patches that a person cannot weld from inside. The drone guide covers food runs, blocked compartments, and the underwater repair loop.
  • Late mythos spaces — rift-adjacent decks, mutated-crew rooms, the Captain’s sealed door, whatever the retail file calls the submerged city. The story walkthrough puts those in order so this map does not spoil ending names.

Why a door will not open

Most “map bugs” are flags.

  1. You have not logged the accident compartment on the communications panel.
  2. A roster job that inspects or unblocks the room is still unassigned.
  3. A hatch is closing because the leak is still live — run, do not argue in the frame.
  4. The Captain’s door is story-gated. It is not a lockpick minigame from another title.
  5. Launch-week hotfixes (15 August 2026) stopped players interacting with an object that should not have been interactable. If a prop looks clickable and does nothing useful, leave it. See patch notes.

Do not import radio or nuclear codes from Static Dread: The Lighthouse. Those puzzles belong to a different building. This wiki will keep saying that because search results mash the titles.

Save consoles — the real fast travel

Developers rebuilt saves for The Submarine after The Lighthouse’s night-only checkpoints. On the Ares you can save yourself. Special consoles sit in different parts of the boat. Reporting through them (the fiction is a report to the Captain) writes a manual slot. The main menu separates manual and auto saves. Steam Cloud is on; a Deck session can continue a desktop file.

Demo saves still do not transfer into retail. That warning is older than the flexible save system, and launch posts repeated it. Do not mix the two facts. Flexible saves are for the full game. Playtest folders stay dead. Launch notes keep the store warning; this map tells you to hunt a console before a risky drone dive.

Captain’s Report, the achievement for saving once, is free. Do it immediately after the roster unlocks. Then save before Timmy, before a rift heading, and before you spend Sharon.

Blocked compartments

The demo changelog is still useful vocabulary for retail: you can distribute food, open blocked compartments, inspect them, and repair the hull with an underwater drone. Those verbs are how the map grows. A room that looks like a wall is often a logistics card. Send Michael or yourself. Inspect. Then walk the new corridor. Do not assume a collectible is behind every weld; collectibles are side pockets, not the skeleton.

If you skip submarine-related tasks, older builds added an extra failure ending. Retail still punishes neglect: leaks move, the reactor counts down, and a bad route kills the boat. The map is a responsibility list wearing bulkhead paint.

Practical routing for a first watch

Start at the accident stair. Secure. Bridge. Roster. Sonar. Then only the rooms your urgent cards name. After the hull is logged stable, wander for the jukebox. If you are lost, you missed a report, not a hidden ladder. For plot order use the Walkthrough Hub. For who dies in which room, crew fates. For whether the layout is worth a second run, the review.

The Ares is small on purpose. Learn ten names, not a hundred. When a new deck appears, it is because you earned it with a heading, a drone, or a sailor you still have alive.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is there an official interactive map?

No public developer map beyond in-game labels and Steam screenshots. Use compartment names and roster cards, not a fan SVG.

Why are so many doors sealed?

Log the stairwell, finish inspect/unblock jobs, and wait for story gates. The Captain's door is not a lockpick puzzle.

Where do I save?

Manual save consoles around the boat, framed as reports to the Captain. Auto saves are listed separately in the menu. Steam Cloud is supported.

Do Lighthouse codes open rooms here?

No. Radio and nuclear sequences from The Lighthouse do not apply to the Ares.
